Harley Gallery
The Harley Foundation is based at the ducal estate of Welbeck, home to the Lady Anne Bentinck and family. Lady Anne’s mother the late Ivy, Duchess of Portland, set up the Foundation as a Charitable Trust in 1977, "to encourage creativity in all of us" and to ensure the continuation of specialist hand-skills in an age of mass production. She envisaged the Foundation helping artists to work by offering them affordable studio space in tranquil surroundings.

The Foundation was granted a long lease for a section of the old kitchen garden at Welbeck, the Tan Gallop and the old estate gasworks. From this Harley have built on the Duchess’ vision and there are now three sets of artist’s studios at Welbeck with space for up to 30 artists and makers, the Harley Gallery and a vibrant programme of events and activities.

Top Dog Exhibition: Harley Gallery
5 July – 25 August 2008

Top Dog features the work of 23 leading designers, who were challenged to create work for pets or wildlife. Using their individual technical skills and vivid imaginations the resulting exhibition is a delight of witty, tongue-in-cheek pieces to practical yet beautiful objects that would grace any stylish interior.

Displays include woven willow pet pods by basket-maker Lise Bech, silver name tags by jeweller Hannah Lamb, dog armour by sculptor Val Hunt, to hibernation blankets by textile designer Rebecca Shreeve and clay bird nesting balls by Green and Blue.
Exhibitor Ruth Waller is one of the Harley Gallery’s resident artists. She created bird boxes made from old coats. She will be available for comment and photography both at the gallery and her studio.

On a more serious note, this exhibition examines the role of craft and design in supporting wildlife by re-making some traditional products with a contemporary twist, and often from sustainable resources. This hopefully encourages support and care for wild animal species.

The exhibition also includes an oversized kennel for young visitors to play in and a pet resource area. Many of the works are for sale so look out for some stylish pets in your neighbourhood!
